BMW also used different naming layers. For example, NBT EVO is the hardware family, while ID4, ID5 and ID6 refer to software/interface versions. How to Identify Your BMW iDrive Head Unit

1. Check the main menu design

Turn the ignition on and look at the main menu, rather than relying only on the navigation map. The following clues are useful:

  • CCC: an early interface with a distinctive split-screen or several large functional areas, simple graphics and slower transitions.
  • CIC: a more refined, mostly vertical menu with Navigation, Telephone, Radio, CD/Multimedia and Settings. The graphics are noticeably cleaner than CCC.
  • NBT: a faster vertical interface with richer icons, smoother animation and more modern media/phone integration.
  • NBT EVO ID5/ID6: a tile or widget-style home screen with a more contemporary layout. ID4 is the difficult case because it can look close to NBT.

Menu colours, highlight bars and icon styles can vary with software updates, region and coding. Treat the screen appearance as a first filter—not final confirmation.

2. Check the production date and VIN

Find the vehicle’s production month and year using the VIN, a reliable VIN decoder or the vehicle documentation. The driver’s-door sticker is not present in exactly the same format on every market, so the VIN is usually the more useful route.

Use the date to narrow down the possibilities. For example, a late F30 3 Series may be equipped with NBT or NBT EVO depending on its production date and options. The same principle applies to the F10, F15, F25, F20 and other transition-period models.

3. Look at the software information screen

Depending on the vehicle, you may find relevant information under a path similar to Navigation > Options > Version information, or under Settings and software information. Menu names vary by market and software version. You may see references such as CIC, NBT, NBTevo, ID4, ID5 or ID6, but the label is not displayed in every vehicle.

4. Confirm with the head-unit part number or diagnostics

The most reliable confirmation comes from the head unit’s part number, a BMW diagnostic scan such as ISTA, or a qualified installer who can identify the unit without damaging the dashboard. Do not remove the head unit just to count connectors unless you are comfortable with BMW trim removal and electrical work.

If you do inspect the wiring, remember that NBT and NBT EVO can both use a 6-pin LVDS connection. Connector type helps match a product, but it cannot identify the whole system by itself.

Which BMW iDrive Head Units Support Factory Apple CarPlay?

Factory CarPlay support is not determined by the word “EVO” alone. In general:

  • CCC and CIC: normally need an aftermarket CarPlay retrofit module or a larger screen upgrade.
  • Standard NBT: normally needs an aftermarket retrofit for CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • NBT EVO ID4: do not assume factory wireless CarPlay; compatibility depends on software, vehicle options and the retrofit approach.
  • NBT EVO ID5/ID6: many vehicles support factory CarPlay, but the feature may require activation and not every configuration supports it.
  • MGU/iDrive 7 and newer: these are different platforms. Use a product designed for that exact system rather than choosing an NBT EVO product by model name alone.

Aftermarket modules can add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the original screen, iDrive controller and steering-wheel buttons. Exact functions—such as factory microphone use, rear camera integration, split screen and audio routing—depend on the vehicle and module configuration.

Why correct identification matters before a retrofit

A module designed for the wrong head unit can cause a black screen, no audio, missing controller functions, incorrect harness connections or an unstable boot process. The same BMW model may require a different product because of:

  • CCC, CIC, NBT, NBT EVO or MGU head-unit generation;
  • screen resolution and display type;
  • LVDS connector and cable configuration;
